Great stuff here from Eleanor Powell and the Woody Herman Band.
Eleanor Torrey Powell (November 21, 1912 -- February 11, 1982) was an American film actress and dancer of the 1930s and 1940s, known for her exuberant solo tap dancing.
Following Broadway Melody of 1940 Powell was sidelined for many months following a gall stone operation and things changed somewhat for the worse, at least as far as Powell's movie career was concerned. 1941's Lady Be Good gave Powell top billing and a classic dance routine to

NOTE: Woody Herman - one of the greatest names in history of American swing, was a clarinetist, saxophonist, singer and big band leader. He lived actively and successfully through several eras of American jazz in the 20s Century: beginning in the mid 1930s with Tom Gerun's and Harry Sosnik's dance orchestras, through the Big Band era of the 1940/50s, and until the turn

This is a great dance number from the film, "Sensations of 1945." Eleanor Powell performed several boogie woogie numbers throughout her career, but this is one of my favorites, and the only one that I'm aware of with a partner. Woody Herman's band also sounds great here as always.

From the '1969 Swinging Herd' broadcast. The band looks really "hip" and thankfully sound even better. Sal Nistico on tenor, Harry Hall trumpet, Bob Burgess trombone, Arthur Harper bass, and the great Bill Chase trumpet. In fact, this is one very strong trumpet section.. Bill Byrne, Galen Jeter, Bill Chase, John Madrid, and Harry Hall.

On that ghastly afternoon when John F. Kennedy died, Woody Herman was recording an album for Phillips. The band was playing Bobby Scott's "A Taste of Honey". Everyone had heard the news and there was in that performance a mournfulness that is not in the arrangement, not in the notes themselves, but in the attitude in the band, whose personnel at that period included Nat Pierce, Sal Nistico, Phil Wilson, and Bill Chase. You can hear it in the recording. It is a striking track, deeply sad, and it shows how ja

Woody Herman and the Young Thundering Herd have the crowd jumpin' and jivin' with such tunes as "Things Ain't What They Used To Be" and "Woodchopper's Ball". Whether playing sweet and mellow songs like "Blue Flame" on his clarinet or singing "Sonny Boy" Woody proves that great musicians, like fine wine, improve with age.
