Francis Poulenc

Francis Poulenc's Sonata for violin and piano was composed during 1942 and 1943 while his country was at war and its dedication is to the memory of a victim of a then-recent foreign conflict: Federico Garcia Lorca, the poet, who was slain during the Spanish Civil War. In these circumstances, even this most delightful of composers acquired a harder edge, as displayed immediately in the Allegro con fuoco first movement with a dark, jagged opening theme on the violin and percussive support on the piano. This theme, reminiscent of Poulenc's friend and model Igor Stravinsky, dominates the movement, providing the basis for both the quieter, melancholic passages, as well as further eruptions of rage. Emotions become more extreme as the movement goes on before it closes on an unexpected major chord. Tentative, repeated chords in t

Robert Shaw festival singers
"C" is one of Poulenc's most beautiful songs, one of his few direct responses to the German conquest of France in World War II. It is based on a poem by Louis Aragon, a prominent member of the intellectual resistence.

"Ce" is an abbreviation for Ponts-de-Ce, a village on the Loire where many bridges cross the river. Emphasizing this, a medieval / renaissance technique is applied where each verse ends with the sound of the letter "C".

The French affection for the flute is brilliantly demonstrated in Francis Poulenc's virtuosic Sonata for Flute and Piano (1956). Each of the work's three movements is fluent and graceful in different ways. The first movement, Allegro malincolico, sounds sweetly sad rather than melancholy. The second movement is a dreamy cantilena for flute in an indete

Woodwind pieces dominate Poulenc's chamber music oeuvre, but the Cello Sonata, like the somewhat earlier Violin Sonata, is a substantial work finding the composer at the height of his powers, and his tongue planted less firmly in his cheek.

Despite a rather rude initial outburst from the piano, the sonata-form first movement, Allegro (tempo di marcia), leavens its fragmentary fanfare-like motifs with lyrical, good-humored material for the cello. One important theme is especially broad, romantic, and bittersweet, although much of the development section is given over to playful treatments of the melodies, with staccato piano accompaniment to cello pizzicato.

The slow second movement, Cavatine, is one of Poulenc's most tenderly songful creations. After a long introduction, the cello takes up a mournf

Concert champêtre (Rural Concerto) is a harpsichord concerto by Francis Poulenc, which also exists in a version for piano solo with very slight changes in the solo part. It was written in 1927--28 for the harpsichordist Wanda Landowska.
The piece is in three movements:

Andante: Mouvement de Sicilienne
Finale: Presto très gai
The piece alludes to music of the Baroque period, when the harpsichord was a common instrument, both in terms of its

Interesting British recording with boys. Some funky vowels and a bass with a vibrato you could drive a truck through. But the tenors nail the final jacentem rather well. (more)

This was the last of Poulenc's five concertos. While in the first fifteen years of his career Poulenc had made a reputation as a light-hearted composer, personal crises in the late 1930s awakened a dormant religious sensibility. Thereafter, including the war years, he had written music of considerably more seriousness of purpose, but even in them retained his lightness of touch and his ability to charm. After the war ended, restoring communication between Paris and America, the Boston Symphony Orchestra com

When not yet 20, Francis Poulenc (1899-1963) composed his Trois mouvements perpétuels for piano in 1918. Written under the twin influences of Ravel and Stravinsky, the Trois mouvements perpétuels are difficult works whose difficulties never intrude on the lyrical lightness of the music. The first mouvement, Assez modere, features a charmingly gallic melody moving through right and wron

Stabat Mater is a musical setting of the Stabat Mater sequence composed by Francis Poulenc in 1950. Poulenc composed the piece in response to the death of his friend, artist Christian Bérard; he considered writing a Requiem for Bérard, but, after returning to the shrine of the Black Virgin of Rocamadour, he selected the medieval Stabat Mater text. Poulenc's setting, scored for soprano solo, mixed chorus, and orchestra, premiered in 1951 at the Strasbourg Festival. The Stabat Mater was well-received througho
