Chicago - Timelapsed

Through the past couple years I've shot a decent amount of time-lapses of the Chicago skyline. I figured why not take all of those and throw the same mirror filter that was warmly welcomed by a lot of people on this: http://www.flickr.com/photos/cshimala/5275838854/

I'm still scratching my head on how long it took me to attend to that dirt spot on my window that shows up too often.

Windy City Nights II is all about my continuing passion for shooting night timelapse photography in a city I truly appreciate for it’s inspiring views and beauty. This project is a continuation of my first Chicago Timelapse movie and I have been shooting for the past 18 months in my spare time in this amazing city to try and capture what your eyes do not see normally. There is something special about looking down on streets of gold and taking in the view.
Windy City Nights II is also about making new connections with Chicagoan's and meeting new people who have assisted me throughout my journey. I truly appreciate all the new connections I have made who helped make this movie possible. My journey has been interesting with lots of rewards and filled with challenges. Chicago is not an easy city to get around with a few hundred pounds of gear and hauling it up to rooftops and other tight spaces where it sits in awkward places for long periods of time.

I ran the Chicago Marathon on October 10, 2010 with an HD camera strapped to my head. I compiled this timelapse from the photos taken every two seconds throughout the journey. I did my best to hold my head steady during the entire run, but it was not easy!

I recorded this out a basement window. Facing South. February 1st 3:30 PM to February 2nd 10 AM. 18 1/2 hours of snowmageddon! It looks like the cars are being buried but it was just a snow drift in front of the window.

Recorded in 720p 2 fps. When played back at 24 fps it lasted an hour and a half. I sped it up by 5000%

Timelapse taken out of a single hotel window in chicago. The first shot is an HDR composed of 3 exposures for each frame. Any flickering you see is from reflections on the window. next time I'm going to buy a Lenskirt for sure. Shot on a Nikon D7000 with a Nikkor 18-200mm lens.

The White Knight is a feature timelapse project Ross Gerbasi and I took on this past October at Chicago’s famous Wrigley Building. If Chicago was a chess board, the Wrigley Building would be a White Knight. The Knight piece in chess represents armored cavalry and is a powerful piece, much like the Wrigley Building. It stands proud in the heart of downtown Chicago along the river and magnificent mile . A Knight is always close to the action and this holds true to the Wrigley Building. One of the things that has always attracted me to the Wrigley Building is it’s unique architecture, it looks like it is adorned with strategically positioned chess pieces up top. It’s a treasure for the eyes with all the unique craftsmanship it contains. I am fortunate to have worked closely with the owners in order to acquire some unique footage from up top, some of which you see here. Also, the word and term Knight and Night go hand in hand with me.

Windy City Nights is the result of a two year journey through Chicago at night. I started this timelapse project back in April of 2012 after getting inspired by a video I saw posted on Vimeo titled “We are Chicago” by Ross Gerbasi. The video contained several night timelapse sequences that were captured in Chicago. Just prior to this, I had been shooting timelapses and started practicing the art on a regular basis. I had been shooting a lot of sports photography since 2005 and just really started to enj
Art created during the final Fare athene Well performances of the Grateful Dead in Chicago. Words could never capture what if felt like to Join the grateful Dead on their final Farewell tour, My main role was creating visuals for the Drums/Space performance, in-between sets I started working on this Artwork. I don't think any single artwork could ever do justice to the roller coaster of emotions experienced over that magical weekend, this is by best attempt. prints available here fine art Edition ht

I was lucky enough to get some time off work to head down to Chicago for a week recently. I was told by so many people that it's a "must see", now I am one of those people, I love Chicago!
It turned out to be cheap as chips driving over the border to Fargo in North Dakota and catching a two hour flight to the windy city. To be totally honest, I wouldn't be surprised if I did it again in the near future.

Enjoy this time-lapse video of the CTA Junction 18 in downtown Chicago. It is interesting to watch the switch-points move and all the traffic through this famous location which used to be the worlds busiest railroad junction.
