British Slang

Hugh Laurie & Ellen DeGeneres

And now we know what these slang words mean :D
1). flossing (Am)
2). chin wag (Br)
3). ba-donka-donk (Am)
4). chuffed to bits (Br)
5). shawty (Am)

It cetrainly feels like Hugh Laurie is Bertie Wooster all over again, and Dr. Gregory House has never happened. Which side of the Atlantic are you rooting for? I say: Go England, go!

Before you watch, please take a look at the two short lists below and try to work out what these examples of regional slang might mean. I'm sure you'll all guess shrewdly!

In today’s lesson, I’ll share some insults and other fun sayings that children use. You can use this British slang to irritate or annoy someone in a childish way. If you are in school in an English-speaking country, you may hear these insults. So you’ll learn what they mean, and how to respond to them! I’m not teaching you these expressions so that you can insult people, but so that you can understand more about English culture, and perhaps even imagine what it would be like to to go to school in England. You can also use these expressions to joke around with your friends. When used correctly, they can be quite funny! Do you know any other childish sayings that I didn’t mention in the lesson? Share them with us in a comment!

In this lesson, you will be introduced to English street slang, an informal kind of vocabulary that is common among young people in the UK. This kind of speech can often be overheard in conversations on the streets of London, on public transit, and in movies. These words and expressions are not appropriate to use in polite conversation, but they are fun to learn and useful to know in order to understand popular culture. In this video, you will learn the meaning of pattymouth, sket, blud, wagan, and many more. Do you know any street slang words that I don’t mention? Watch this video, and comment below!
